EVs are becoming much more accessible. You no longer necessarily need to spend $60,000, $70,000 or more to get into something fully electric, and that's where the ARCFOX T1 becomes interesting. Starting from **$34,990 + ORC** during the current launch offer, the T1 sits in a price bracket where it becomes relevant to people who may not have previously considered an EV. But price alone doesn't make a car worthwhile. The ARCFOX T1 is a compact fully electric SUV from ARCFOX, the electric vehicle brand associated with BAIC. It's designed around urban and everyday driving rather than trying to be an enormous long-range EV. That makes quite a lot of sense for New Zealand buyers. Especially in a city like Wellington. The T1 offers up to **310km WLTC range**, a **70kW electric motor producing 176Nm**, and DC fast charging from approximately **30–80% in 25 minutes**. It also comes with a **6-year / 200,000km warranty**. On paper, those are some pretty compelling numbers for a vehicle at this price. ## So what about Wellington? This is where I think specifications can sometimes be misleading. A car having a huge theoretical range sounds great, but if you're primarily commuting around Wellington, Lower Hutt, Porirua and the surrounding areas, you might not actually need it. For a lot of drivers, the more important question is: **Can I get through my normal week without thinking about charging?** For commuting, shopping, appointments, school runs and general city driving, the T1's range could make a lot of sense. And an electric drivetrain is particularly pleasant around town. There's no traditional gearbox, the power delivery is smooth, and the car is quiet at lower speeds. ## What I like about it The biggest attraction is arguably the overall proposition. You're getting a fully electric vehicle with modern technology and SUV practicality without moving into the price territory associated with many larger EVs. The interior also feels like it's trying to move beyond the idea that an affordable car needs to feel basic. There's a modern digital interface, a panoramic sunroof, voice functionality and a range of driver-assistance technology. That doesn't necessarily mean every feature will be important to every buyer. But it's good to see this level of equipment becoming available at a more accessible price. ## The range question This is probably one of the first things I'd discuss with anyone considering the T1. The advertised figure is **up to 310km WLTC**. As with any EV, real-world range will vary. Temperature, speed, traffic, driving style, terrain, heating and air conditioning can all have an effect. And Wellington's hills certainly aren't going to make your energy consumption look like a flat motorway run. That's why I wouldn't recommend buying an EV based purely on the number printed on a specification sheet. Think about your actual driving. The T1 supports DC fast charging, with approximately 30–80% taking around 25 minutes under the specified conditions. For home charging, your situation will depend on where you live and what charging equipment you have available. If you have access to overnight charging, EV ownership can become remarkably convenient. Instead of making a trip to a petrol station, you can essentially start each morning with the car ready for the day. But if you live somewhere without convenient charging, that's something I'd want to work out before buying. Again, the right car depends on your circumstances. ## Is it actually an SUV? It's compact. That's a good thing for some people and potentially a drawback for others. If you're regularly carrying a large family, lots of luggage or equipment, I'd suggest comparing the T1 with something larger. Honestly. You can read every review on the internet, compare every specification and watch every YouTube video, but none of that tells you whether **you** actually like the car. How does the driving position feel? Do you like the steering? Is the cabin comfortable? Do you understand the technology? Does it fit your normal driving? And perhaps most importantly: **Would you be happy getting into it every morning?** That's what I'd want to know before making a decision. ## Who should consider the ARCFOX T1? I'd particularly suggest looking at it if you're: - Looking for an affordable entry into EV ownership - Primarily driving around town - Interested in a compact SUV - Wanting modern technology without a premium price tag - Replacing an older small SUV or hatchback - Curious about EVs but haven't found one that fits your budget It may not be the right car for everyone. And that's completely fine. The point of a test drive isn't necessarily to convince yourself to buy something. It's to find out whether it works for you. ## Current pricing The ARCFOX T1 is currently advertised from **$34,990 + ORC**, with the current launch offer subject to its terms, availability and stock.
